This guide shows you the correct ways to wash and care for your garments.

segregate clothes

Step 1

Segregate Light and Dark Colored Clothes.

Tip: Empty pockets, unfasten the buttons and lift the collar before washing.

Segregate based on fabric strength

Step 2

Segragate based on the fabric durability and strength of wash cycle.

Reminder: Heavy fabrics require heavier wash cycles that can damage lighter fabrics.

not hand wash or dry clean

Step 3

Verify that the garments are not for hand wash or dry clean.

When in doubt, here is a list:

  • Linens – Dry Clean
  • Wool – Dry Clean
  • Twill – Hand wash / dry clean garments with linings

set the temperature

Step 4

Set the temperature.

Reminder: Use warm water for light colors and use cold water for dark colors and cotton items.

Reminder: Cotton garments should be hand washed alone for the first time.

set load size

Step 5

Set load size.

Reminder: Never squish clothes down so that you can fit more in.

Step 6

Set the washing cycle

Step 7.a

Add washing fluid.

The amount of detergent you put in your washing machine is determined by how large your load is. Generally, detergent lids act as cups that have marked off amounts.

Generally, 1/3 of the cup should be filled with detergent for a small load, 2/3 for a medium load, and a full cup for a large load. However, read your specific detergent bottle for instructions on how to use that detergent — some detergents are more concentrated than others, meaning you don’t need to use as much.

Step 7.b

Add washing fluid.

Bleach is used when you want to get tough stains out of clothes, or you want your whites to be really, really white.

There are two kinds of bleach. Chlorine bleach is good for really making your whites white but should never be used on any colored fabric. All-fabric bleach can be used on colored fabrics.

fabric softener

Step 7.c

Add washing fluid.

Fabric softener should be added during the rinse cycle. Some machines have a dispenser where you can pour the softener when you begin the wash cycle, and it will add it to the rinse cycle at the right time.

set the right cycle

Step 8

For those who use dryers, move the garments and select the right cycle.

Reminder: Keep in mind that delicate clothes should be air dried.

air dry clothes

Step 5

Let your clothes air dry.

Lay flat heavy garments so they do not lose their shape.

Do not expose your garments to direct sunlight or heavy winds, especially if they are colored.

If drying indoors, make sure the area is well ventilated.

General Information

  • Tumble drying and direct light tends to damage the garment.
  • Never experiment with tough stains. Take the garment for professional cleaning.
  • Whiteners are preferable to bleach.
  • Use less detergent and distribute it evenly in order to avoid stains.
  • New clothes with bright colors may have to be hand washed by themselves for the first few times unless you have something in a very similar color.
  • For dark colored garments, the colors may bleed after the first few washes, therefore the garment should be washed alone.

  • Iron at a low temperature.
  • Garments should be dry when ironing.
  • For delicate garments, use a pressing cloth on reverse when ironing.

If you look after your garments correctly you can enjoy and keep your garments looking great for longer. Another friendly reminder from Your Laundry.
